Kruissingel, 9712 XN GroningenGerlach van Beinum is one of the last classical arable farmers under the smoke of Amsterdam. Enclosed between encroaching modernity -- distribution centers, highways, multinationals - he moves through the seasons at his own pace. For a few years, he is followed on his fields in Amstelveen, where he grows potatoes, beets, grain, and strawberries with the help of his best friend Rinus, which he sells from his barn.
Portrait of an imperturbable farmer
Meanwhile, the outside world imposes itself more and more brazenly, in the form of money-hungry entrepreneurs, the municipality, noise pollution from Schiphol, the neighboring McDonald's, and a failed harvest due to climate change. But Gerlach plows on: with the help of his brothers, he conducts lawsuits - occasionally successfully - and sows new crops.
Aliona van der Horst and Luuk Bouwman portray the imperturbable farmer with the same dedication and love with which he works his land. The film was awarded the prize for Best Dutch Documentary at IDFA. With a post-screening discussion with Aliona.
