Capella Groningen
San Salvator church
Hora Siccamasingel 202, 9721 HW GroningenCapella Groningen conducted by Merlijn Wackers
The programme centres on the famous four-part Mass by William Byrd. The movements are interwoven with works of Tears and Comfort: music that reflects deep sorrow gradually gives way to pieces of light, redemption, and hope. The ensemble performs the renowned When David Heard by Thomas Tomkins, and the concert opens with Weep, O mine eyes by John Bennet.
The programme also features extensive music by Thomas Tallis. Both Byrd and Tallis served as singers and organists at the court of Elizabeth I (1533–1603), the last monarch of the House of Tudor – a golden age in English culture, shared with figures such as Shakespeare and Marlowe. Tallis’ Latin motets, including Salvator mundi and In ieiunio et fletu, build on the Franco-Flemish polyphonic tradition. His English works, such as If ye love me, reflect the musical heritage of the Reformation.
Each piece is a gem from the rich treasury of Elizabethan polyphony, one of the most vibrant periods in English music.
