Each year, the festival commissions a new composition from a talented Dutch jazz musician. This year, the honour goes to saxophonist and composer Kika Sprangers. For the North Sea Jazz Composition Commission, she created an ambitious work titled The Way Wild Rivers Flow, in collaboration with the Netherlands Chamber Choir.

At the Rockit pre-party in De Oosterpoort, the piece will be performed live in Groningen for the first time. In this suite, Sprangers’ lyrical saxophone blends with the sound and expressive power of twelve voices. She explores the balance between freedom and structure, allowing space for improvisation and personal expression. In addition to the choir, the ensemble features Alistair Payne (trumpet), Reinier Baas (guitar), Tijs Klaassen (double bass), and Jonas Burgwinkel (drums).
