Cycling Tour through the Groninger Peat Colonies

The Groninger peat colonies are unique in Europe. Until the 17th century, this area was an almost uninhabited swamp, yet it held unimaginable economic value: peat. Large-scale extraction of this fuel created an entirely new landscape over the centuries, characterized by long straight canals.

Starting at the protected village view of Kiel-Windeweer, the route takes you past "De Toekomst" in Nieuw-Compagnie toward Leinwijk. It continues through Meerwijck to the birdwatch wall in the Kropswolderbuitenpolder, then past grain mill ‘De Hoop’, and finally through the Gorechtpark back to the start.

Along the way, we’ll share stories about peat extraction, the waterways and old potato starch factories, the role of the Zuidlaardermeer, and, of course, local nature development.

Participation Info

The route is approximately 20 km long and mostly on paved cycling paths. Bring your binoculars! Each participant is responsible for their own safety, and we expect your bicycle to be in good condition.
