A Night of Brahms and Jenkins in Groningen’s Martinikerk

Classical music has a unique ability to stir emotions and transport listeners — and that’s exactly what awaits you in this special concert by the VKSO, led by conductor Lubertus Leutscher. Taking place in the historic Martinikerk in Groningen, the evening promises a powerful blend of Johannes Brahms’ rich romanticism and Karl Jenkins’ moving spiritual modernism.

Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 is widely regarded as one of the greatest first symphonies ever composed. Taking over two decades to complete, the piece is a dramatic and triumphant musical journey—from darkness and struggle to radiant light and resolution.

In contrast, Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater brings a contemporary but deeply emotional perspective. Blending classical traditions with world music elements, Jenkins paints a vivid and sorrowful picture of Mary grieving at the cross. The work’s emotional intensity is brought to life by mezzo-soprano Carina Vinke, alongside the VKSO concert choir and the Städtischen Musikverein Meppen from Germany, who together create a performance full of heart and soul.

Jenkins is known for his gift for melody—his compositions are rich yet approachable, resonating with seasoned classical listeners and newcomers alike. It’s this emotional clarity and accessibility that has made Stabat Mater a beloved work around the world.

The Martinikerk, with its stunning Gothic architecture and superb acoustics, provides an ideal backdrop for this musical evening. It’s more than just a concert—it’s an immersive experience of light and shadow, tradition and innovation, all in one unforgettable setting.
