Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN Groningen GroningenDavid Lynch's Blue Velvet was initially too strange for mainstream cinema audiences, but the sadomasochistic neo-noir grew into one of the biggest cult hits of all time.
A curious young man (MacLachlan) discovers an undercurrent of sadomasochism and violence in a tidy provincial town. Lynch sketches two worlds: on the one hand, the conviviality of the shorn lawns, the friendly waving citizenry and innocent teenage girls. On the other, rampant degeneracy, depicted by a maniacal drug dealer (Hopper) who dishonours himself and a nightclub singer (Rosselini) in every way possible. A layered film, a waking dream that takes you to all corners of the condition humaine.
