Mafia film from the 80s. John Cassavetes' most commercial and accessible film, still retaining plenty of his avant-garde film style.

A raw film about a young Puerto Rican boy who is chased by the mafia because he witnessed a murder. He ends up under the care of the tough ex-girlfriend of one of the mafia members, Gloria, played by John Cassavetes' film muse and wife Gena Rowlands. They flee together and grow closer as the story progresses.

Gena Rowlands received her second Oscar nomination for Best Actress for Gloria. In 1999, director Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men) made a remake under the same title, but it failed to surpass the intriguing style and intimate atmosphere of the original.

The whole of August, In honor of the 50th anniversary of A Woman Under the Influence (1974), we will be showing the best films by the pioneer of American independent film: John Cassavetes.
