From noise rock to neoclassical: Russian pianist and composer Evgeny Grinko has taken an unconventional path. With viral breakthrough Valse and a run of dreamy albums, he became an international phenomenon. This past spring he released Winter Moonlight, a moody, melancholic continuation of his earlier piano works.
After starting out as a drummer in underground and noise-punk bands, Grinko discovered the piano as his natural language. Since then he has explored a world of hushed melodies and subtle arrangements, leaving space for both sorrow and wonder. His sound feels intimate, cinematic and timeless — think Max Richter or Philip Glass, but with a slightly surreal edge. He now lives in Berlin, having left Russia in 2022 due to his outspoken criticism of the war in Ukraine.
