Gaja Caruso — Men of Meat and Fire

Station Noord maker Gaja Caruso presents Men of Meat and Fire, her very first solo performance. Through an intensely felt choreography, she probes the breaking point of a radicalising person. This multidisciplinary dance work follows a man who claims no one remembers how to make fire and who places himself outside society. A performance about loneliness, misogyny, self-hatred, and the crisis of masculinity.

Context

Last year, dancer and theatre maker Gaja Caruso found a diary filled with reflections on The Game by Neil Strauss, a pick-up artist. Fascinated by the writing, she delved deeper into the world of incels: involuntary celibates.

Men of Meat and Fire embodies the inner world of an incel. How does the woman move inside an incel’s mind? And where is her breaking point?

“I see loneliness, misogyny, self-hatred, and horrific gender-related murders (femicide) as chapters of the same story: the crisis of masculinity. With my performance Men of Meat and Fire I explore the mind of an outsider who could one day become a murderer. I want to contribute to understanding how we can help these people and how we can stop their radicalisation.”
