About the Work
Her first textile work, “the girl and the alphabet,” was created by Ellis op ’t Landt from the awareness that body and language are the means of expression we must work with in life. Then came the series of black wall objects Transformative Black, where she focused on the invisible and mysterious side of nature, her main source of inspiration. Wishing to use more color in her work, she created monochrome oval wall objects. She continued this trend in the more playful series of medallions. Even more color was applied in the series of small undefined wall objects, called Little Things. The woven rectangles with the working title Schutzengel remained monochrome for now.
At Op ’t Landt, the focus is on color, texture, form, and space, without reference to visible reality. Each work speaks as an independent object in its own language. Working in series allows her to create a new mental space in a different form. A wall of 12 x 12 photos also offers insight into how she experiences visible reality.
Ellis op ’t Landt studied drawing and painting at the Willem de Kooning Academy, worked over twenty years as a set and costume designer, and has been creating autonomous work since 2011.
