During a sailing trip around the world with his parents, young Michael and his dog Stella are swept overboard during a heavy storm. They wash up on a remote island in the Indian Ocean. Far away from everything he knows, scared and alone, Michael tries to survive. Until he discovers that he is not alone on the island.

The island is home to Kensuke, a quiet and reclusive Japanese man who has been living there since the Second World War. He lives in harmony with nature and a group of orangutans, and prefers to be left alone. Nevertheless, a special friendship slowly develops between him and Michael, despite their differences in language and background. When their peaceful island life is disrupted by dangerous poachers, they must join forces to protect their special world.
