In the dead of night, an unnamed Aboriginal boy is delivered to a remote monastery in the Australian outback. This shelter for abandoned children is run by caring Sister Eileen, who is patient with the boys in her care, but also determined in her mission to convert them to Christianity. The newly arrived New Boy, as he is called, does not speak English and resists the customs and rules of the monastery, but he does seem to respond to Eileen's religious practices.

When a beautifully carved crucifix is ​​placed in the monastery, he views it with the greatest admiration. The boy turns out to have extraordinary powers, comparable to those of Eileen's chosen savior – powers that could disappear if Eileen fails to see how Christian and indigenous beliefs can coexist in harmony.
