Wadden Sea World Heritage Centre (WEC) in Lauwersoog
The Wadden Sea World Heritage Centre (WEC) in Lauwersoog, Netherlands, is a beacon of conservation and education, dedicated to preserving the unique ecosystem of the Wadden Sea and its inhabitants. As the new home of the renowned Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre (SRRC), WEC continues its mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release seals, while also offering visitors an immersive experience into the world of these marine mammals and their habitat.
A Legacy of Seal Care
Founded in 1971 by Lenie 't Hart in Pieterburen, the SRRC began as a modest seal crèche, providing care for orphaned seal pups. Over the decades, it evolved into Europe's most advanced seal hospital, treating hundreds of seals annually and contributing significantly to the conservation of the Wadden Sea's seal population.
In April 2025, the SRRC relocated to the WEC in Lauwersoog, a state-of-the-art facility designed to support its ongoing efforts. The new centre boasts 12 intensive care units and 21 rehabilitation pools, all equipped with seawater systems to closely mimic the seals' natural environment, aiding in faster recovery.
Exploring the Wadden Sea Experience
Beyond seal care, the WEC offers an interactive "Wadden Sea Experience," allowing visitors to learn about the region's unique ecosystem, the forces of nature that shape it, and the delicate balance between humans and the environment. With panoramic views of the Wadden Sea, the centre provides a comprehensive educational journey for all ages.
A Nod to the Past: Pieterburen's Seal Sanctuary
Before its relocation, the SRRC was a cornerstone of the village of Pieterburen. For over five decades, this small community was home to the centre's operations, where visitors could witness firsthand the rehabilitation of seals and learn about marine conservation. The village, known for its picturesque landscapes and proximity to the Wadden Sea, provided a serene backdrop for the centre's mission. While the SRRC has moved to Lauwersoog, the legacy of its Pieterburen roots continues to inspire its work and the global community it serves.
