Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN Groningen GroningenSwedish TV presenter and filmmaker Filip Hammar takes his father on a road trip. But what starts as a journey through the past becomes an emotional rollercoaster, as the filmmaker understands what is lost to the ravages of time.
Popular TV presenter, podcast maker and author Filip Hammar takes his 80-year-old father Lars on a road trip past the places they holidayed when Filip was young. Lars has been retired for almost 15 years. Lately, he has had some minor ailments and has been increasingly reluctant to leave home. Lars's wife, Tiina, thinks something should be done and decides to contact Filip. The road trip becomes a more meaningful experience than expected when Filip realises that his father is gradually deteriorating physically and that no amount of exercise, activity or care can change that.
Filip and his colleague Fredrik Wikingsson (known in Sweden for their shows) have created a beautiful portrait of a father-son relationship-a predominantly upbeat road movie with staged interludes reenacting memories of Lars and Filip. The Last Journey is also an ode to teachers and the impact they can have on the lives of their students. Lars may have lost some of his energy and physical abilities, but his humour and compassion are a constant. As is Philip's love for his father, which shines through this touching film.
