CLAY WEEK 14 - 21 SEPTEMBER

Museum Wierdenland, Kloostermuseum Aduard and Op Maarhuizen present CLAY WEEK from 14 to 21 September: a week filled with lectures, workshops, walks and various activities centered on Groningen clay. This clay, once deposited by seas and rivers, shaped the mound landscape and has been used and crafted by people for centuries.

The early mound dwellers already used clay to make pots, bowls and cups, and to seal their houses against the wind. With the arrival of monasteries, clay was used on a larger scale to make bricks, known as kloostermoppen. Smaller bricks are still used today in house construction, and clay continues to be used for tableware.
