Shoom are no strangers to our lovely little city. At first, I wanted to write a long description of their sound, but when I read “Jazz meets mosh-pit” in their YouTube bio, I knew no further words were needed. Because that’s exactly what Shoom is. Incredibly good jazz, centered around a fiery saxophone and with a gritty edge that makes you want to shove the person next to you. This isn’t jazz for grey mice in sofas puffing expensive cigars with their eyes closed while sipping cognac to wash down atonal trumpet solos. This is jazz for young, carefree romantics who've had five Schultenbraus and are ready for the weekend. They’re making great strides too—besides several (very good) EPs, they recently completed a UK tour. That’s probably where they met Dura Mater, their British counterparts. And now they’re bringing them back to the North. Dura Mater also plays urgent jazz that pairs perfectly with a warm, sweaty, cramped basement. Two for the price of one! See you then! | YORKO
