Astor Piazzolla and Eduardo Rovira are two pioneering pioneers of tango nuevo. It is often claimed that there was a certain rivalry between the men. There is also still debate as to who was the greatest innovator. This still unanswered question was the starting point for Sonico’s double album published in 2021: Piazzolla-Rovira: The Edge of Tango.

Until the mid-1950s, tango was little more than Argentine café and dance music, with singer Carlos Gardel as its great hero. Until both Piazzolla and Rovira began to shake things up. In 1955, Piazzolla laid the cornerstone in the birth of modern tango with his Octeto Buenos Aires. The following year, Rovira joined the Octeto La Plata, where he provided arrangements and played bandoneon.

Piazzolla-Rovira: The Edge of Tango brings the music of the Octeto Buenos Aires back to life, despite the fact that Piazzolla had burned the scores. Rovira’s arrangements were lost during a flood, but they too were brought to the surface by Sonico. During this concert, the music of both godfathers of tango nuevo will be juxtaposed and you will hear that they each, in their own way, provided tango with new blood.
