Discover a fresh take on the classic fairytale The Ugly Duckling, brought to life by the talented 8–9-year-olds of Route Verbeelden at VRIJDAG in Groningen. Over the past few weeks, three different groups of young performers have been working hard to reimagine this well-known story, each adding their own creative twist. From diary-inspired storytelling to empowering scripts about self-confidence and embracing individuality, these performances are full of heart, humor, and originality.

Group A, led by teacher Erin, drew inspiration from personal diary fragments. Cynthia’s group crafted a play about a duckling named Zwaantje who learns to stand up for herself, while Anniek’s group created a performance centered on how to turn your quirks into strengths. These diverse interpretations remind us that everyone, at some point, can relate to feeling like the “ugly duckling”—and that’s what makes these shows so relatable and powerful.

To celebrate the theme, audience members are encouraged to attend in their ugliest outfit and wear it with pride! Performances take place on May 25, with multiple showtimes depending on the group. Group A performs at 1:00 PM and 3:15 PM, Group B at 2:30 PM and 4:45 PM, and Group C at 1:45 PM and 4:00 PM.
