Trompsingel 27, 9724 DA GroningenThe Northern Irish punk pop band The Undertones are known for their infectious mix of punk, power pop, and rock ‘n’ roll. Their songs are short, melodic, and direct, often with sharp lyrics about youth, love, and everyday life. In contrast to the socially critical tone of many punk bands of their time, The Undertones opted for light-hearted themes and a distinct sense of pop melody. The band made history in the late 1970s with Teenage Kicks. The single became a cult classic. In the years that followed, The Undertones became one of the most beloved bands in the United Kingdom, with hits such as Here Comes the Summer, Jimmy Jimmy, and My Perfect Cousin.
By 1983, the band had released four albums and firmly established itself as a pioneer of the genre. Then things went quiet until the group made a comeback in 1999 with Paul McLoone as the new frontman. Since then, The Undertones have been performing regularly again, with shows that effortlessly combine classic and newer work. Live, the band still plays with the same sharpness and enthusiasm as in their early days. Fifty years after their formation, their short, punchy pop songs still sound urgent and unpolished, exactly as they were always intended to be.
