Waddenkust Visitor center

Waddenkust Visitor Center

The Waddenkust Visitor Center is located in a former school building from 1867 in Pieterburen. It’s the perfect starting point to explore the Wadden Sea area. The center is designed for hands-on experiences and features a shop and tourist information point (TIP Waddenland).

Thematic focus and interactive elements

The main themes include the coastal biotopes and the importance of the Wadden Sea as a refueling stop for migratory birds. There’s a special “wet zone” where children can conduct experiments and observe plants and animals under a microscope. A documentary about the Wadden region plays continuously in the center.

Excursions and activities

All Wadden excursions begin at the visitor center with a short guided tour. From there, walking and cycling paths lead directly to the Wadden dike—an ideal way to explore the natural landscape.

Nearby, you’ll find the Kwelders (salt marshes), a unique and stunning area of natural beauty worth visiting.

The Wadden Festival

Every two years, the center hosts the Wadden Festival, a vibrant day full of nature-focused activities and encounters. It’s a great outing for families, with workshops, music, and plenty of outdoor fun. The date of the next edition will be announced via the activity calendar, usually taking place in May.
