World Down Syndrome Day 2026

World Down Syndrome Day 2026 in Groningen: Activities and Connection

This coming Saturday, March 21, it’s that time again: World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). A day celebrated globally to highlight positivity, talent, and – this year more than ever – true connection. At Stay in Groningen, we find it important to highlight the places and people that bring color to our city. That’s why we’re diving into the meaning of this day and visiting one of the most heartwarming spots in town: Brownies&downieS.

What is the meaning of March 21?

You might wonder why this specific date was chosen. The reason is quite logical from a biological perspective. People with Down Syndrome have an extra copy of the 21st chromosome; they have this chromosome three times instead of twice. The date 3/21 (March 21) is therefore a direct reference to this 'trisomy 21'.

Since 2011, this day has been officially recognized by the United Nations. It is a day where countries, organizations, and individuals worldwide reflect on the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down Syndrome. The goal? To show that everyone has the right to a life with freedom of choice, control, and dignity.

Theme 2026: ‘Together against loneliness’ in Groningen

This year, the Down Syndrome Foundation has chosen a theme that touches us all: ‘Together against loneliness’. Although Groningen is a vibrant city with always something to do, loneliness is a growing issue, also among people with Down Syndrome and their families.

Loneliness is more than just a sad feeling. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and a decreased quality of life. Sometimes a steady group of friends is missing, or people don’t feel fully understood by society. This year, we call for making real connections. Inclusion often lies in the small things: a sincere smile, a short chat, or an invitation to join in.

Why do we wear mismatched socks?

You will undoubtedly see it on social media this Saturday: people wearing two different, often brightly colored socks. But do you know why we do this? When you place socks heel-to-heel, their shape resembles chromosomes. By wearing two different socks, we celebrate the fact that we are all different. It is a simple but powerful symbol for diversity. So: pull your most striking, mismatched socks out of the closet this Saturday!

Groningen dances along: The national flash mob

To emphasize the theme of 'connection', something spectacular is being organized this year: a national flash mob. On March 20 and 21, children and adults with Down Syndrome will dance together with their friends, family, and classmates in squares and schools across the Netherlands.

Practicing is also happening in and around Groningen, for example at the Grote Markt! The goal of the dance is to show that people with Down Syndrome fully belong. Dance is a universal language; it makes us visible and literally gets us moving. The images of this joyful action will be shared nationwide under the hashtag #flashmobWDSD.

Inclusive hospitality: Brownies&downieS Groningen

When talking about a place in Groningen where inclusion and passion meet, we cannot overlook Brownies&downieS. This special lunchroom has been a household name in our city for years. It’s a place where you come not just for the best brownies or a good lunch, but especially for the pure interaction with the team.

At Brownies&downieS, 'superstars' with intellectual disabilities (including many with Down Syndrome) work with immense joy and craftsmanship in the hospitality industry. Every day, they prove that a disability doesn't have to be a barrier to talent. The atmosphere is always casual and warm – exactly what we need in the fight against loneliness.
