Brownies & Downies Groningen

Brownies&downieS Groningen

Pure is Perfect

A lunch café where everyone is welcome – and where people with an intellectual disability or distance to the labour market find a full and meaningful place in the team.

The story of Brownies & Downies in Groningen

On 24 May 2016, the doors of Brownies&downieS Groningen on the Oosterstraat opened for the first time. The two founders, Frank and Nicole, both have a background in care for people with disabilities. When Brownies&downieS crossed their path, it didn't take long to make up their minds: they left their steady jobs, found a suitable premises, arranged the finances, and started a new chapter. A chapter about coffee, brownies, and genuine inclusion.

Working and growing: meaningful day activities

At Brownies&downieS Groningen, sixteen people with an intellectual disability or distance to the labour market take part in a structured day programme. They are not a side note – they are the team. Together with trained supervisors who always provide tailored support, they carry out all the day-to-day tasks in the lunch café.

The philosophy is simple: let people do as much as possible themselves. That means learning to make coffee, helping in the kitchen to prepare sandwiches, operating the till, and taking orders from guests directly. Every day, another small step forward.

This makes Brownies&downieS Groningen more than a lunch café. It is a place where people with a disability show what they are capable of – and where guests can see that for themselves, every single day.

World Down Syndrome Day

Every year, the world takes a moment to mark World Down Syndrome Day. A day to raise awareness, challenge prejudice, and celebrate the contribution people with Down syndrome make to our society. At Brownies&downieS Groningen, that is not a one-off moment – it is the reality every day. People with Down syndrome are part of the permanent team on the Oosterstraat. They welcome guests, handle orders, and contribute to the atmosphere that makes Brownies&downieS so special. Not as a symbol, but as colleagues. World Down Syndrome Day reminds us that inclusion is not a favour, but a choice – and an enrichment. Brownies&downieS Groningen makes that choice every morning, as soon as the doors open.

Food & drinks

Quality food is a top priority. The menu features sandwiches, salads, soups, coffee, pastries, and of course the homemade brownies that gave the café its name. A dedicated children's menu is also available.

A firm favourite from the menu: the club-style chicken with romaine lettuce, roasted chicken, egg salad, bacon, and parmesan. A generously filled classic, full of flavour – perfect for a satisfying lunch.

More than just lunch

Brownies&downieS Groningen also organises fun events, such as a wine tasting combined with a painting workshop. Delicious food, great wines, professional guidance, and a relaxed atmosphere – places are limited, so early booking is strongly recommended.
